If the words “rec room” makes you think of table tennis in a bare basement, then you are ready for some fresh ideas from the playrooms on the next pages. Just a glance at the spunky décor and innovative design of these rec rooms will convince you that basements don’t have to be bare and table tennis isn’t the only game to play.
From game rooms to home gymnasium and party rooms, here are playrooms for wherever you want them –integrated with the main floor living areas or under the house for the times- honored basement conversion. You’ll also see specialized recreation areas such as a video room and children’s playrooms.
Rec rooms have multiples uses. The number of activities you can fit into a playroom depends on its size and your ingenuity. The larger the space, the more vigorous the games and indoor sports you can include, and the more activity areas it can handle. Yet even modest sized rec rooms can serve many purposes if you keep storage plentiful and furniture minimal and moveable. Pool tables are usually too heavy to move, but table tennis sets now come in collapsible version. And fold up tables and chairs can make way for indoor badminton or indoor horse shoes.
Gymnastic and exercise equipment is finding its way into more homes now that physical fitness is a way of life for many families. Some pieces of equipment, such as small balance beams, slant boards, and stationary bicycles can be move to the side of a rec room when the space is needed for other even. Heavy equipment, such as a barbells rack or wall pulley will need a permanent place but can still share recreation space.
